…and so it begins.
“In the beginning, God created…” - Genesis 1:1
Bear with me. I am not writing a theological dissertation in this first blog post(maybe in the next one), but I think this beginning of scripture holds value in the way I view art…and purpose for that matter. According to scripture, we were made in the image of God. By this, we are not God, nor do we have the full power of God, but we reflect His Glory.
Have you ever looked in the sky and seen a color way that was the most beautiful scene in the world? I’m talking about reds that fade into blues that have streaks of gold and clouds blurred in the midst of them. The type of scene that you can sit with your parent, children, significant other, or dog and just know each other is in awe of its awesomeness. Now have you seen an artist’s rendition of the same scenery? Expressing all of what they see and the beauty they interpret, but they just can’t nail it like the original. I mean my goodness do they get close, but that original is just mo’ betta. The art piece is just amazing, incredible, unbelievable…and you know the artist that made it is amazing, incredible, unbelievable also…but are they? Or are they just a human, made in the image of God, reflecting the beautiful talent that The Creator brought into existence?
As an artist, I can only create to the degree of what already exists. I can’t create something from nothing. Only God can do that. My hope…my only hope is to be a reflection, an image of the the Creator. I know it was no mistake that God gave me this talent…this skill. The only purpose I have in it, is to give it back to Who gave it to me. I can do this by sharing it with the world and that’s what I will do, until He takes it or me away.
To my fellow artists, whether writer, dancer, athlete, on and on, so forth and so forth, let us create. Why? Because God Himself created. And there is purpose in that passion you have.
